Add-On Domains, Parked Domains and Sub-Domains
When you have set up your website and your website start running, you may go for expanding it. While doing site expansion, usually firms register new domain name. Opening new accounts can be expensive in some cases especially if there is a large amount of data and you need greater space. The solution is to share the web space and bandwidth among different sites. You can do this in the following these three ways:
Add-On Domains
It is actually subdirectory within the existing domain hosting account. Add-on domains are registered with the same domain name. Its functioning is same like any other domain. For example, if you have a domain name and you can make your add-on domain. The main advantage with add-on domain is that the browser will show the bar with add-on address and not the original reference will be shown. The add-on domains also get their own CGI-Bin along with sharing of web space and bandwidth. If you are not getting any space then add-on domain will be free. You may have to pay a marginal monthly fee for registration on heavy space.
Parked Domains
A domain which doesn’t have a hosting account is parked domain. Parked domains usually enable URL forwarding capabilities in such a way that it points to existing web site. For example if you run your newsletter in a subdirectory and you want to change the domain name then you can do it with the parked domains. In this case you don’t need to register the new domain with the same company. The main difference between the add-on and parked domains is that the URL address bar will change the physical location in case of parked domain. Parked domains are also good for the webmasters.
Sub-Domain
It is also known as third-level domain. It is normally used to create web addresses for various sub-sites of one major site. For example Yahoo has sub-domains for its different services like mail.yahoo.com for the mail. The sub-domain is normally used by the large businesses with the focus on products or services. You can also transfer the traffic from one particular domain to another location within the main site or a different site. It is important for sub-domain to mention the main domain that will tell us the link between sub-domain and main domain.
All these ways can be used to set the domain hosting. You can choose the one which suits you according to your business and requirements.
